  • Healthy Families Celebration!
CHAWK and the Ashlawn Parent Teacher Association (PTA) held their first-ever Healthy Families Celebration on Saturday, February 3, 2007, at Ashlawn Elementary School in Arlington. See the photos.

The event focused on simple, affordable ways to achieve a healthier lifestyle and prevent health problems, such as diabetes and obesity, especially through nutrition and physical fitness. The Celebration featured health screenings; healthy food samples; handouts and displays about immunizations, nutrition and physical fitness; information about local low- and no-cost health clinics; games; storytelling; music and dance performances.

The event was free and open to the public.

Many Thanks to Diane Schwartz, all our sponsors, and the many volunteers who contributed to making this event a rousing success.

  • October 4 was Walk & Bike to School Day in Arlington. Ashlawn students met at various pre-determined points on bike and walking trails and sidewalks around the school. Carrying signs made in Ms. Hicks' art class, they walked and biked to the basketball court. There, they were welcomed by Mr. Miranda and Superintendent Robert Smith. Also present were School Board Chair Mary Hynes, School Board members Ed Fendley and Frank Wilson, Assistant Superintendent Meg Tucillo, and Walk Arlington's Jan Goldstein, as well as other Arlington Public Schools employees.

After a welcome from Mr. Miranda, Superintendent Smith praised the Ashlawn community for valuing healthy eating, physical activity, and a healthy lifestyle. The children received stickers saying they had walked or biked to school. Carrying their signs, they walked up the hill to Ashlawn.

Students who took part in the event are invited to submit their stories and photos to Walk Arlington. For more information, please visit Walk Arlington's site at: http://www.walkarlington.com/go/walktoschool2006.html

CHAWK's third One-Mile Family Fitness Fun Run & Walk drew 85 people on Friday, June 2, despite the threat of rain throughout the day.  See write-ups with photos of all the CHAWK Walk Fun Run & Walks: June 10, 2005, October 14, 2005, and June 2, 2006.
  • May 7, 2006
CHAWK COURTYARD GARDEN DAY: On Sunday, May 7, from 2 to 5 p.m., CHAWK volunteers spent a delightful afternoon beautifying  Ashlawn's courtyard.  The volunteers could be seen pruning, raking, weeding, planting, and spreading mulch.  Several children pitched in to romp around the courtyard and assist with gardening. Every child who brought a recycled container was able to plant a seed in that container to take home. Healthy snacks and drinks were served. Watch this space for pictures of the event.

If you would like to help out with the courtyard garden in the future, please contact cara@chawk.org.

  • April 2006
Principal Edgar Miranda announced that the Recess Before Lunch pilot program was successful. After reviewing the input from students, staff and parents Ashlawn has decided to adopt the program.  The children will continue to go to recess first and then lunch.  Mr Miranda expressed his thanks to all for their support and input.

The School Board has postponed discussion of the recess issue/wellness policy so that issue will not be on the agenda at the April 20 meeting. Stay tuned to the CHAWK Homepage.

  • Friday evening, November 18
At the first CHAWK Film Night, Ashlawn parents watched "Super Size Me," the documentary everyone is talking about. "Super Size Me" is Morgan Spurlock's account of what happened when he ate nothing but fast food for a month. The story of how Spurlock went from good to poor health is a cautionary tale that addresses school lunch food, too.

Following the film, a pediatric nutritionist gave a short talk on how you can provide healthy quick food for your family. The event ended at 9:15 p.m.
  • Friday evening, October 14
CHAWK's second Family Fitness Fun Run & Walk was attended by 135 people, who ran, walked, played with sports equipment, and picnicked on a cool fall evening (see article and photos).

And visit this page throughout the year to learn about meetings, tastings for students and parents, and other CHAWK events.
