Under a cloud-filled sky with patches of blue, 135 members of Ashlawn's community came out
on October 14, 2005, for the second CHAWK One-Mile Family Fitness Fun Run & Walk.
After on-site registrations were completed, P.E. teacher Dan Pototsky led a stretching
clinic at center field. What a wonderful sight to see so many children and their parents
stretching their limbs in preparation for the race. Among them was Principal Edgar
Miranda, wearing a banner made for the event that proclaimed him the "Principal
Runner." School Board Member Mary Hynes stopped by to lend her support to the run.
School Board candidate Ed Fendley was also there and participated in the race.
At 5:40, parent Keith Eddins called the participants together. Mr. Miranda then greeted
the group. A moment of silence was observed for Christie Sens, a beloved mom and wonderful
member of our Ashlawn community. She will be greatly missed by many. Following this
tribute, Mr. Miranda readied the runners and walkers to start the course.
Course participants--from strapping 5th graders to tiny 2-year-old siblings, plus parents,
Mr. Miranda, and special education teacher Helene Holland--went five times around a
pre-set loop. The children received a hand stamp each time they completed one loop. Every
child who completed the course received a CHAWK water bottle. Participants also enjoyed an
assortment of Clif bars, donated by Whole Foods.
After the race, children and adults alike played with sports equipment arranged by Mr.
Pototski. There were hula hoops, jump ropes, a parachute, footballs, soccer balls, tether
balls, basketballs, and other equipment.
By then, the clouds had given way to a beautiful sky, and several families set up picnic
blankets on the lawn and ate supper. Soon thereafter, a lovely moon appeared in the sky
over Ashlawn. It was a fitting end to a lovely evening.
Thank you to all of our wonderful participants for coming out to enjoy the fun run and
walk. Thank you to Mr. Miranda for leading the race and lending his support. Thank you to
our volunteers for their help setting up and keeping the race going-Keith Eddins, Marjorie
Macieira, Karen McCan, Sara Pierce, Stacy Porro, Priya Pshyamsundar, Barbara Raizen, Carol
Spicer, and Andy Tarr. Thank you to Ashlawn's PTA for a generous donation that allowed us
to purchase and distribute the CHAWK water bottles. And thank you to Dan Pototski for the
MANY ways he helped ensure the success of the race.
